July 2nd  Wednesday    Started early over to the Mawddach, and found the river high and dirty, but it had run down a good deal. Commenced at Gethigemlyn [sic] with worm, but did no good there, so crossed the bridge at Tyn y groes and went down to a pool below to a pool below Bryn Cemlyn where I caught a fine Sewin. After lunch the river was just clear enough for fly, so i put on a large black doctor and in the Long flat, I rose a fine Salmon, but could not get him to come a second time. Caught a Sewin at the Railings, and after fishing up to Meeting of the waters, I turned and went below Bryn Cemlyn, and in the rocky pool I hooked a fine grilse which gave me grand sport, and I was very glad when I had him in. He took a Thunder & Lightning fly. I tried a pool or two afterwards, and then walked home across the hill, as I was anxious to be back early .... Heavy rain fell this evening. Salmon 1 Sea trout 2  Grilse 7 (1/2) lbs. 3 1/2  1lb 1oz [ ???? ]  Sent from Samsung Mobile

Tuesday September 5th... reached Dolgelley about 10.30. As the rivers were in such good order I walked to Llanelltyd bridge and fished up the Mawddach..... The water was in a very dirty state being much discoloured by mine water. I could not rise a sewin so I walked up to the Precipice Walk and round by Nannau Lake home...Lloyd went out with a gun but only shot a Land rail. A fine day. Landrail 1

Thursday August 9th or 8th A fine day. We breakfasted as usual at 7.30 and the Minor started to fish the river while I walked up to Llyn Cynwych. As the lake was calm I began fishing for perch and was soon in a shoal and caught one, but I had to give it up as I could not keep the boat in the same place not having a rope. I searched hard all day, both for trout and perch. I rose four trout and in the evening lost a couple of perch. The minor had a good day`s sport on the river killing 450 Trout including one Sewin..... Trout 150 Perch 1

We had breakfast at 6.30 and the otter hounds went to [Banner Abbey] but I did not go with them but walked over by the Precipice Walk to that meeting of the waters on the Mawddach to fish the pool there. The water was very clear, but I expected to do better than I did, only caching 4 eels so I gave up at 3 o`clock and walked home and met the Minor fishing at the Big Pool. We had a very jolly bathe and fished towards Dolserau. The otter hounds had no sport. The Minor caught the sewin in the Big Pool Trout 32 Eels 6 Sea Trout 1

Saturday August 24th A very close day and fine. We hardly knew where to fish today but we decided to stick to the river, the Minor fishing for small trout about Dolserau while I walked up to the Big Pool and there caught a very nice Sewin (9 oz.) with worm. I then went on to the Lugog Pools and saw some splendid fish in the deep pools and a Salmon which bit my worm twice, but of course the fish was very shy, and I only got two trout 1/4lb and 7oz. besides small ones. I walked back to meet the Minor..... met him on the river when I went to pay after 6 o`clock at the Ford. He had caught a great number of small ones - with Wynne, also a large Eel. Trout 161 Sea trout 1 Eels 3 Total killed during the week. Grouse 4 (Bob and H Browne) Snipe 2 Talyllyn Trout 15 Wnion - trout 234 Sea trout 2 Eels 9

Monday August 26th As it was raining hard this morning the Minor and I expected a flood down the river so we accordingly walked up to the Big Pool and fished it without success and as the weather cleared up we walked home and took Jack and the Phaeton to Pont Issa and when we got there, a beautiful water was coming down. I fished the Pool under the Bridge with worm and got a Sewin and 8 fine Trout and the rest of the afternoon we fished down with fly for Sea Trout: if we had had luck we should have made good bag but I lost 2 Sea trout and the Minor 3. We fished some way below Bont Newydd till 7 o`clock and caught Sea trout 3 Trout 50 some of which were nearly 1/2lb.

The Minor was out fishing in the morning and caught a good Sewin and after 12 we went for a tramp after partridges towards the Fron Mines and near Coed. We saw 2 very good coveys, but were very unlucky with them and unable to mark them down. The consequence was we did not come across them again. We greatly wanted a dog. I shot the snipe at the Mines.... we had a wet drive home at 1045 .... Partridges 1 Snipe 1 Sewin 1

Thursday September 19th It was very showery this morning and the Minor and I got up at 5.30 and fished before breakfast but it was very little use, although the Minor hooked two or three Sewin in Dolgun Poole. The Minor started for Eton by the 10.30 train.... till 12.30 when I went out fishing the river being very high but not dirty. I began at the Ford Pool and at the head of the Pool rose a grilse which I eventually hooked and killed after some exciting sport. I had good fun with sea trout, but lost a great many. The river-watcher was with me all the afternoon and I fished up to Bont Newydd. Grilse 1 4 [and a half] pounds Sea trout 5

Wednesday July 1st A very wet day. Wind SW. The rain, which was much wanted, continued all day; and the Minor and I got up at 5 o`clock to fish from the ford to Dolgun, in the hopes of killing some sewin; but I alone rose one: We had breakfast at 8 o`clock; and then drove up the river and I began fishing at Bont Rhiadyr [sic], while the Minor drove higher up. The river, however rose very rapidly and the trout would not rise well; so I walked down about 10 o`clock; and meeting the Minor, who had a nice lot of trout; we fished the Ford, Handbridge, and Dolgun Pools with worm: we caught some nice trout: one I caught at the Do l g u n being a nice fish of 1/2 lb: but the funny thing was we did not meet a single sea trout: we gave up fishing at 6 o`clock, and got back to Dolserau in time to see the Squire and Wilson Noble arrive. It cleared up this evening Trout (Wnion) 133

Thursday July 2nd A showery day. Wind SW. The Minor and Noble drove up in the phaeton Bont Rhaiadyr to fish the Wnion, which was in good order for fly: while I had intended to go to the Mawddach, but as Davies never came, I did not go: but fished the Wnion from the Bathing Pool down to the weir stream and I then walked up to Llyn Coch, and fished down: but I did not rise a single sewin, and gave up about 3.30: having caught 44 trout. When I got back, I went down to see the pheasants with the squire, and then came back and read till dinner time. The Minor and Wilson did not see a single sewin: but the former caught some nice trout. Trout (Wnion) ME 44 WN and LE 83

Saturday July 4th A fine day: but a heavy wind blew from SW. We determined to go over to fish the Mawddach today, and made a start in the phaeton at 8.30: and as W Noble did not get up we went off without him, and he joined us later in the day. We began fishing at the `Rock` Pool: and fished up to the Pool above the "meeting of the waters [UN dyfynnod], and although the water was in excellent order we did nothing: but the Minor rose two Sewin, and I one. We had ocular proof that fish were in the river, as at the top Pool, we watched some good fish jumping at the Fall, and some even running up; and this may account for their not looking at a Fly. We gave up fishing soon after 5 o`clock rather disgusted, and walked back to Tyn y groes: and were soon home in time for dinner. We brought 3 more kestrel hawk`s [sic] back with us, as Davies climbed up into the nest and caught them.

Monday July 6th We had breakfast at 7.30: and the Minor and I started over to Tyn y groes, to fish the Mawddach: and I walked over the hill by Nannau in 3/4 hour. The river was very low, however I began with small flies, while the Minor tried the worm: and I was unfortunate in losing a sewin just below Tyn y groes, as soon as I began: and the Minor lost another higher up with the worm. Unluckily 3 men with Abel Ellis went out on the river above us: and they caught 3 sewin. The Squire, Mother, Nelly and W Noble came with our lunch to the Meeting of the Waters, and just as we were joining them we saw a man netting a Pool: and take a fish of about 3lb out. The Squire came down; and we found the man had no licence, so when we returned we told Colonel Romer; and the case will be investigated tomorrow in Dolgelley. After lunch, I fished a short way up the Eden, but to no purpose; we had a very jolly bath in the Pool about 5 o`clock, and then started home; calling on Colonel Romer on our way.

Wednesday July 8th I read for two hours before breakfast, which we had at 9.30: and afterwards we went out to fish the river: the day was very hot and bright: and it was no easy work to catch fish. I walked up to just below Bontnewydd: calling to see the Pheasants in the covert on my way. I fished up through all the Helygog Pools: and caught some very good trout: but it was very hard fishing. I saw a Salmon of about 6lbs in one of the Pools: but I did not see a Sewin all day. I gave up fishing at 6 o`clock; as we had intended to dine at seven o`clock and go to the [Gelf`s] dance: but as the Squire heard by telegram of the death of Uncle Edward: we did not go. The Minor and I were up early; and went to the ford at six o`clock, the river being in high flood: but we did not do much good I alone getting one Sewin of a lb: and we fished the crooked Pool, and then into breakfast at 7.30: of course we used worm. After breakfast we went to Dolgun Pool, where I caught another Sewin with worm, and the Minor hooked another. I also tried a minnow, but did no good. I used a fly as soon as possible, but the fish were immovable, and I fished right above the Helygog pools, but did no good. Wednesday July 15th We had breakfast at 7.30: and we hardly knew where to fish: but the Minor determined to go up the Wnion; while I made an expedition to the two lakes on Cader, viz Llyn Arran and Llyn-y-Cader [sic]. I walked up to Llyn Arran in one hour and five minutes: and it was a rather sleep walk up there; and the weather was close and hot. I was disappointed in finding no breeze; but a great many trout were rising: and I caught three, one about a quarter pound: and also what I think is a gwyniad: a silver little fish. At 12 o`clock I walked over to Llyn y Cader [sic]: and had some fair sport there: but the Lake was very shallow, and covered with rushes. The fish were small, but I caught 50; and gave up about 6 o`clock and came home by Llyn Gwernan. The Minor did not `meet` a Sewin, although the river was in good order. ME Trout (Llyn Arran) 3. It was very bright for fishing in the morning but a nice breeze was blowing, and I expected to do better than I did, but the fish never rose well all day and I had to fish very hard to catch my dozen: I had six by lunch time at 1.30: and I fished for an hour and a half in the afternoon without getting a rise! I caught one fish 3/4lb: and had six in the afternoon. I caught with Red ant. Red pennell. P & green. G & orange. I walked home from the bottom of the Pass; and dinner was at 8 o`clock. I caught two before lunch, one of them 3/4lb at the Poachers Rock Pool. Owing to the Cefn Coch mine, sending into the river a lot of filthy water, the river became very dirty, and I think must have put the fish off. I rose several below Tyn y groes: and hooked one. We fished up till we met them, with the Squire, Mother, and Nelly: and were sorry to hear that the Minor had lost a fine grilse grilse of about 6lb: owing to a bad hook. Monday July 27th Owing to the showers of yesterday, we expected the Mawddach to be in good order, so the Minor and I drove over there, and began fishing at the Poachers` rock: but the river was lower than we expected, and the sun came out very bright at times, so that about 11.30 I gave up in disgust: and determined to go for Trout above the Falls. Had I not been so terribly tormented by midges I should have done better than I did. The Minor caught a Sewin about 2lb, soon after I left him, and he also had a small one. Mother, Mrs Sheriff, Mis`s Bridgeman and the two little Richards` came over for a picnic to Tyn y groes: but the rain spoilt it all. The Squire drove the Minor and I home. We played a round game this evening. Sea trout (Mawddach) 2 Trout (Mawddach above Falls) 23

Friday April 2nd Wind westerly and cold... walked up Llyn Cynwych [after breakfast 9.30]: and the breeze was blowing very steadily, but not as fish would rise: and the only one I saw was the one I caught, which was a good fish. About 2.30 I left the Lake, and went down to the river at Dolgun: and fished till 5 o`clock, but it was very low and the trout did not take well. I caught Sewin Kelt, much to my surprise: but the fish cannot get down to the sea owing to the dry weather. The wind blew very strong from the West, with every appearance of a change. Friday June 11th A cold and showery day. We breakfasted at 8 o`clock, and as the Wnion was partly in flood; I went out to fish it in the hopes of getting hold of a Sewin, and I did hook a good fish in the pool below Llyn Goch [sic], but whether it was a Sewin or not, it was hard to say; but the fish got among some roots and got off. After lunch at Llyn Goch [sic] I determined to go up to Llyn Cynwych [sic] and try for Perch: which I accordingly did, but so strong and cold was the wind, we could do no good,Davies alone catching one Perch of about 1/2lb. I met Kempson up there, but he was not fishing. I tried for trout with a fly for a short time, but only rose two: hooking one. I got home about 6.30 and played cricket for half an hour or so, and we dined at 7.30. Llyn Cynwych (Perch)1 Trout (Wnion) 15.

Tuesday June 15th I read this morning from 8.30 till 12 o`clock: when I went out to fish the river in the hopes of getting a Sewin after the fresh flood in the river, but the fish would not rise at all, not even the Trout. I came in and had some lunch as I passed the house: and fished up the river to Bont Newydd: and came back by 6 o`clock: and being wet through to the skin owing to the rain, I did not go to meet Hamilton who arrived today. Thursday June 17th Read all the morning till 2 o`clock when we lunched, and I then went out to fish the river, which was in good order, and as the day was mild, I had great hopes of catching a Sewin. But suddenly a very heavy fall of rain came on: which caused the river to rise gradually: and I then fished the small pool opposite Dolserau farm; and there [stuck] in a Sewin of about 4lb: but having only a trout rod and light tackle, he gave me a regular half hours job: the river rising rapidly and the stream being very strong. The fish was well hooked, but having no landing net, I thoroughly [mauled?] him in my hands, and he broke away much to my disgust. The river came down in heavy flood afterwards, and I had good sport with a worm at Dolgun pool and the meeting of the waters: I also tried the Ford Pool with a Fly later on; and did not get in to dinner till 8.15. Trout (Wnion) 16, one of which weighed 1/2lb. The sewin was hooked on a large "coch-y-bonddhu [bonddu]".

I went out after breakfast, and fished till 2 o`clock: and had capital sport with the trout: catching some very good ones: although I did not meet Sewin: then it was very bright. The river was again in good order, owing to rain during the night, and i went out fishing about 6 o`clock: and commenced just below the house: and did no good until I came to the still water: below Dolgun: where I caught two trout (the two weighing a lb & 2oz) and I believe I rose to Sewin there. I was in for 8 o`clock breakfast: and the Squire arrived by the first train from Corwen this morning, and the Minor also arrived from Ireland by the 12 o`clock train. After lunch, having read all the morning, the Minor and Coxe went out fishing on the Wnion: while I went up the Clwyedog [sic]. Wednesday June 30th I did not read before breakfast this morning: the Minor started early by the Coach to fish up the Mawddach: and after we had done our reading: and had lunch at 1.30: Hamilton, Coxe, and I started over by Nannau to Gelli y gemlyn [sic], where we met him at 3 o`clock: having had no sport: and rather "down in the mouth". However we set to work again: and the Minor hooked a good Sewin just below Bryn Cemlyn: which jumped off: and I was unfortunate in losing a fine grilse of quite 4lb: which I hooked at the Meeting of the WateDavies was with me, and we were all ready with the landing net: but the fish kicked off just when I thought it was safe. We went up to Cornelius` Pool, where we saw a few small fish jumping up the Fall, and then as it was late we started homewards: and I and Hamilton walked across the hill, getting in the same time as they did; and we sat down to dinner soon after 8 o`clock: after rather an unlucky day`s fishings.

Monday July 1st A hot and close day. I read before breakfast: and we lunched at 1.30: and then started in the phaeton: and walking up to the Meeting of the Waters met the Minor there: but he had no sport. Soon after I began fishing I smashed my rod to atoms as I was getting over a wall, as a huge rock fell on it: and smashed it at the but. I was very much cut up as it is a beautiful rod Coxe, who bathed in Cornelius` Pool, lent me my small trout rod and we fished for Trout for a short time, but only caught a few. As we missed Hamilton, Lloyd stayed for him: at Tyn y groes with Jack, and the phaeton; and Coxe and I walked across the hill: and got in in time for dinner: and the others got back not so late. The Minor rose a Sewin in this morning: but that was the only one we saw. Trout (Mawddach) about 12

I did not stay with them long, but started off to Coedmaeswglog, and had a good long walk over the moor, but I was disappointed with the grouse: only seeing two birds, and Lewis, who I went down to see afterwards told me to me of a covey of 6, and also of a lot of young partridgesI returned home by the railway, meeting the Minor, and I bathed at the Big Pool.... Saturday July 24th A fine day. Wind NW. I read all morning and we went out on the river: and I rose a Sewin in the crooked pool with small flies: and also another lower down. But as the sun kept coming out: and the wind was bad, I started up to Llyn Cynwych [sic]: and reached there about 5 o`clock: having caught some minnows for bait at the Nannau Ponds. Had it not been so cold and windy I might have had some good sport: and I caught the Perch just before I left off fishing: and then the wind was dropping gradually: however, as I did not want to be late I started home, and got in at 8 o`clock. Monday August 9th Heavy rain fell this morning, so the Minor and I got up to fish: but the river did not rise very quickly, and as the rain stopped we did no fishing before breakfast. Afterwards we went by rail to Drws-y-nant to fish down, and the river was much discolored, but had not risen more than a foot or so. We had a very heavy thunderstorm in the middle of the day, but not much rain: however, the Sewin would not rise at all, so I gave up about 2 o`clock and had a walk to Llyn Cynwych, and got there about 4: but as the rain came on I went down to the Wnion again, and tried the Ford Pool and Crooked Pool without success. We did not go over to the Mawddach, but fished the Wnion with worm, going up above Bontnewydd, and also as far as the Mill Pool towards Dolgellau, but owing to the high flood, we could do little good, and the Ford Pool was the only place where we met fish, killing two Sewin, and losing two others, but they were small. We went right up to the Falls, and I left the Minor about 3 o`clock and walked home, as I wanted to meet Arkwright who was coming to shoot with us. Monday August 16th The river was in fair order for small flies, so the Minor and I went out fishing, but about 11 o`clock so bright did the sun get that we gave up immediately: I having risen 3 Sewin and caught one. We started about 11.30 to shoot at Penantigi and Maesygamdda, and then set to work, and as there was a good scent we soon found our birds. The first covey of four we got, but were unlucky with another 7 or 8 birds: the Minor alone shooting at them, killing one and [.... ?]. We then went on to Maesygamdda, and found some birds there, shooting 1 [1/2] brace: but the birds were rather wild. I went down to the crooked pool and fishing with small flies, hooked a 3lb sewin on a red spinner, and after an exciting tussle of 20 minutes the Minor landed him for me. We then fished up with fly, and I caught a smaller one:- and by the time we reached the Helygog pools the river came down and we separated, and fished with worm, and met again at the Ford Pool; had the Minor some more hooks he would have done better, but he was broken by a big fish. Charlie Owen, whom I met at Bont Rhidyr [Rhaeadr] gave me leave to go over Gethli [sic Gelli] Farm, and here i found most of the birds I saw, but they were very wild and did not shoot up to form. We came across a covey of at least 12 birds after lunch on Gethli, but I could only get a long shot at them, and we never found them again. I gave up shooting soon after 2 o`clock, walked home, and paid at the Big Pool on my way. I went out to try for a Sewin when the sun went down; I rose two in the Ford Pool, and two in the Pool in the hollow, one of which i killed. The Minor returned from Chester at 10 o`clock. We then started up after grouse; and had a very wet walk. Birds were wild, but we killed a brace and a snipe, and then gave up as the rain came down in torrents. Wednesday October 13th I wrote up Bridgman, who is staying at Caerynwch, also to Hughes to shoot with us today the day being so fine, but they could not come: so the Minor and I had a long but unsuccessful ramble after Cock pheasants: beating the railway covert, Dolgarnedd, and Lletyrys [Litterice (uchod) =? Llety rhys]: we saw Pugh out, but I do not think he had much shooting. We only found three Cock pheasants, and a good many hares, which of course we did not shoot at. We were home early and I fished till it was dark, and hooked a good Sewin. The Minor and I dined at Caerynwch at 7.30 this evening. It was a bright moonlight night, with a hard frost. We woke up early this morning to find the Wnion in one of the highest floods known for years. The river was over the bridge, and through the plantation. Wynne and I went before breakfast and tried with worm, but really there was no place to fish, and Wynne alone caught a small sewin. After breakfast at 8.30 we started over to the Mawddach ... and went up to Gethigemlyn , and worm fished. I caught three good fish in this pool, and one other with worm; and in the afternoon we went off to the Eden, and found it just in order for fly The sewin, however, rose very badly, and Wynne caught a small one. The latter left me at the junction and I crossed at the wooden bridge, and tried some of the best pools the other side - on the Mawddach. I hooked one fish. I did not get to Tyn-y-groes till 9 o`clock and we stayed the night at the hotel. We were very tired after a long days fishing. Grilse 1. (Mawddach) 2lb. Sea trout (Mawddach ) 3 (1) 2 1/2lb. The first thing I did was to hook a sewin, but the fish broke my very light tackle in some sticks. I was equally unfortunate with two other sewin, one being a very good fish, but I managed to catch a small sewin, and 51 trout, and I left off fishing at the bridge. Sunday September 1st A fine though dull day. Went to Church this morning Saturday September 7th A misty, dull day which turned to rain in the afternoon. Wright and I started with Kinsey to shoot Cors y garnedd. We had a hard mornings work beating the scrub, and not having a shot, only seeing one hare. Besides I beat all the top part of the mountain, on the chance of seeing some grouse. However after lunch we came on a very good covey of partridges, out of which we killed 3 birds. But afterwards as the weather got so bad we could not find them again. We got home about 5.30, and I went out on the river, which was very low, but I saw two sewin follow my fly in the Ford Pool. Friday 27th June 1879   Having slept at Corwen, overnight, I started by early train at 7 reaching Dolserau at 8.15. Heavy rain during the night, and weather very stormy and unsettled. After breakfast drove over to Mawddach, and commenced fishing at Gethi gemlyn [sic Gelli gemlyn] . Fished the best pools up to Tyn y groes without seeing a Sewin; meeting Col. Romer who said a great many salmon had run up. I walked up to Meeting of waters and tried the upper pools. Did not stir a fish, and walked home across the hill in pouring rain   Blank [= dim pysgod]

Saturday June 28th    Again drove over to Mawddach, and commenced at Gethi gemlyn [sic  Gelli gemlyn], at the tail end of which I landed my first Sewin, a fresh run little fish of 1  1/4lb. Tried hard for another, fishing up to Meeting of waters, but the stormy and unsettled weather is much against fishing, and I do not suppose there are many Sewin in the river yet. Tuesday 1st July 1879   The weather made me alter my plans, as fishing mountain lakes this sort of weather is a farce. So I took the 12.10 train to Dolgelley, and walking back to Dolserau, I lost no time in being on the river which had been in very high flood. By the time I commenced fishing it was just clear enough for fly, this was about 3 o`clock. Fished between Llyn Coch and Dolgun, and only saw one decent fish (I think a sewin) in the Ford Pool. Heavy, squally showers again this Evening, and weather most unsettled

Wednesday 23rd July After breakfast at 9:30 this morning, I commenced fishing on Wnion., Beginning at Dolgun and fishing all the best pools up, hoping to get some Sewin. I hooked a fine fish in the crooked pool (of course, on a trout fly) and lost him after a good fight. Fishing up to Bontnewydd, I had no sport so in the afternoon went up to Llyn Cynwych which was no good, wind being strong and rather cold. Coming down again to the Ford, I hooked another Sewin, which broke the barbs of my fly. Really bad luck. Millais was on the river, and I gave the few trout a caught to him. Wnion Trout 8

I caught a good sewin (4 1/4lbs) at Gethigemlyn, but did not do anything more till I got to the Meeting of the Waters where I got two small ones, and one also just above. I then went up above the wooden bridge to try fly, but it was rather too discoloured. Walking back to Gethigemlyn, found the river just getting clear for fly. Pearson began at Tyn y groes while I went up to Cemlyn flat, below meeting of Waters, and I had a bad stroke of luck, as after about a dozen throws I hooked a fresh run fish of 8 or 9lbs on small Butcher. The fish unfortunately got off, and I was surprised as I thought him well hooked . Caught a sewin of 2lbs at meeting of Waters, and afterwards I went up, Pearson joining me for lunch. I started away by the 3.55 train to stay with the Sheriffs at Crogen. We dined this evening at Palé.

Tuesday 9 September 1879 I was out this morning about 6.30 to find the Wnion in high flood, and the rain still continued. I tried from the Ford to Dolgun with worm before breakfast, and killed two Sewin, both small. After breakfast I drove over to the Mawddach Ned Morris (our new underkeeper) coming with me. River high and dirty. Commenced at Gethigemlyn [sic], and caught 4 or 5 Sewin there, and I am sorry to say lost two good ones: crossed over to the pool below Bryn Cemlyn, and went up as far as the Meeting of the Waters and then gave up at 3, just when the river was getting in grand order for fly; but I was obliged to go as I left this evening by 6.45 mail to Town. Friday, 19 September 1879 A fine day, warm, wind SE. We had a very pleasant picnic at Llyn Cynwych [sic] today. I went up during the morning to fish, and I was regularly beat by the fish, which were rising in great numbers for a tiny midge. They would not look at any fly I tried. I gave the Perch try for half an hour or so before going down to the river, and caught three; and Connie Campbell who came up with the Millais caught one. I fished the Wnion from 4.30 till 6.45, and tried for sewin from the Ford at Dolgun. Did not see one, but caught a very good trout weighing 9 oz. Llyn Cynwych and Wnion Perch 4. B trout 16 (1) 9oz

Wednesday, July 28 A wet morning. Breakfast at 7:30 and drove over to Tyn y groes and stayed there: I began fishing at Gethi gemlyn [sic Gwlligemlyn?] and killed two or three nice sewin there with the worm, and the river rose very rapidly, and soon came down very heavily: and became too high for fishing. I crossed over at Bryn cemlyn bridge and went down to Llyn Coch but it was too high, and I went down to some holes below, and here had a [nightly sell??] with a big eel, as he ran out in the stream and took me below the afon Wen where I could not follow, I gave the right to John Ellis and ran round by the bridge, and great was my disgust when I pulled out this big eel! I went round to Gethigemlyn again but I did no good there, so I ended up at the Meeting of the Waters: above which in Mawddach I killed 4 sewin, making my bag up to 15. The river was muddy all day. July Monday 26th Heavy rain fell during the night, and it was showery all day. Breakfasted at 6:30 and about 7.30 drove over to the Mawddach. Found the river in high yellow flood consequently began at Gethigemlin with worm. Was not very lucky here only killing two small sewin: but in the run above I killed two good fish, and broke in a 3rd stupidly striking too hard. Crossing over Bryn cemlyn bridge, I went to the pool below and killed a[3?] fine sewin there. I then went up to the Meeting of the Waters, which to my great surprise I found did not exist: the Eden having hurled rocks and stones into the pool during the late heavy storm: in fact the Eden was a most extraordinary height. we are doing at most texts was a most extraordinary site height. Above the junction I killed a good sewin: and then after lunch I crossed over to Eden, an unlucky move, as I fished right up to the larch post without stirring a fish. The river was a very bad colour. I went down to Eden Bridge (Pen y Bont) and the trap here met me and I finished up at the Gethigemlin [sic Gelli gemlyn] killing three sewin with fly and loosing [sic losing] a 4th. The weights of my fish were very good. Seven sea trout weighed 13 3/4lbs. Mawddach. Sea trout 12 ..... [manylion yn y gwreiddiol] 9 caught with worm 3 caught with fly 5 B trout

Tuesday 27th July Fine day, cloudy strong breeze very unsettled looking weather. Started punctually at 3 over to Gethigemlin [sic Gelligemlyn] -walking over. Began fishing at the Poachers` Rock, and here Hugh Jones met me. Went below and in the pool above Dolcloccards hooked a nice sewin 2 1/4lbs on small thunder and lightning. Returns to Gerthi gemlin [sic] and fished steadily up to meeting of waters. Killed another fish just below Tyn y groes and lost a third at the Meeting of the Waters. I met several other fish, but they took badly. I did not go above the Meeting of the Waters but returned and fished some pools down but did not stir another fish. Hugh Jones left me at Tyn y groes and I returned to the Poachers` Rocks but somebody was fishing there so I went to the long pool below Dololocards [sic] and gave up fishing there. Walked home by Llanelltyd – the weather was rainy in the evening. Mawddach. Sea trout 3. (1) 2 1/4 pounds, (1) 1 1/2lbs. Brown trout 1

Thursday, July 29 I breakfasted at 8, and was on the point of starting to the Eden, but out as I was on the point of going down came the river in flood, as a good deal of rain had fallen. I began well at Llyn Goch [sic. llyn Coch] killing three nice Sewin with worm one being 2 1/2lbs. I went round to Gethi gemlyn [sic Gelligemlyn] but could do nothing there so afterwards I went all the way round to Eden and went up Craig gwyn [sic Craig Wen?] but did not stir the fish: but in the rocks below. I killed one Sewin (1 1/4lbs) and lost another. I returned to Gethi gemlyn in the evening and killed two more sewin with fly one a very nice fish 1 3/4lbs in the run above, and one at the tail end of Gethi gemlyn. Returned to Tyn y Groes late in the evening. Mawddach and Eden Sewin (1) 2 1/2 (1) 1 3/4 (1) 1 1/4 (1)1lb. The sewin of 1 1/4 pound was killed on Eden Trout 1

Friday, July 30 I started out about 8.30 and fished steadily up to the Meeting of the Waters with fly., But the river was a very bad colour, though a nice height. I only killed one sewin and that was one 1 1/4lb at the railings. After [xxx] I went round to Eden which was a good colour: but I did not stir the fish, but I saw one nice salmon jump. I fished up to Craigwyn [sic] , and in the holes below killed one nice sewin and lost another. Afterwards I went up Mawddach, which was a beastly colour – muddy, and quite unfit for fly, so I turned down again below the Meeting of the Waters and killed a small sewin on the way down. I returned Home this evening, the trap coming to meet me. This makes my total for the five days 41 Sewin Sewin 3 (1) 1 3/4 (1) 1 1/4 The seein of 1 3/4 pounds was killed on Eden

Tuesday, August 3, [1880] I started early and fished up the Wnion with small flies. I began at the crooked pool, and fished right up to Bont Llyn Rhaidyr [sic], but my sport was poor as I only rose one sewin, but I spotted several nice fish notably one in Dolgarnedd wood which I saw rise, but I could not get him to look at my flies, and I eventually scared? him by flinging worms in front of his nose. I walked up to Coedmaeswglog to see and talk with Mr Harris about the shooting: he readily gave me full leave. I returned home, tried some pools near home, but soon went in. Wnion Trout 30

Friday 6 August 1880 Richie came down from Caerynwch this morning at 8:45, and drove over with me to Tyn y groes. I began fishing at Gethi Gemlyn [sic. Gelli Gemlyn] and the river was in fair fly order, but rather thick, and the sudden rise about midday spoilt the fishing, and about 1.30 a steady downpour of rain came on and continued nearly all day. Richie left me at the Meeting of the Waters, and I went up to the Falls with Hugh Jones, but as soon as we got up to the top pool, a heavy flood came down. I eventually returned to the Meeting of the Waters and fished up with worm. I caught two sewin. Mawddach. Sewin 3 (1) 1 1/2 pounds I got a good many trout with a worm. Number not kept.

Saturday 7 August [1880]. I went out to the river at 8:45. John Ellis with me. Began fishing above Tyn y groes and rose a salmon three times in Dolgoed pool.: But he missed the fly each time. I was much disappointed in not hooking the fish. I fished up to the Meeting of the Waters, and rose several sewin, but they came very shyly at the fly. I caught a small one at the Long flat, and then as rain was coming down in one continuous downpour, I determined to go down to Gethi Gemlyn [Gelli Gemlyn] and await the flood. I tried the pool above and captured a nice sewin of 2 1/2lbs, and hooked and lost a small one at Gethi Gemlyn. I then retreated into the farm for lunch, and when I returned to the river it was in raging flood, and it soon became quite unfishable. I lingered about up to the Meeting of the Waters in the hopes that it would fall, but it did so very slowly, and was a white milky mud colour. The wind, after a sharp thunderstorm, veered round to the NE and it continued showery and turned much colder I never saw the Mawddach so high before; the water was splashing over Bryncemlyn Bridge. The Wnion rose a great height and a great many fields were under water. Drove drove home this evening: the trap coming to fetch me.

Monday, 9 August [1880] I drove over to Tyn y groes and went to Eden first, but the river was low: and as the sun came out very strongly during the day, it was very little good fishing. I tried up to Larch tree pool, and then went to the Mawddach and tried up to the Falls, but to no purpose, so I returned to the Meeting of the Waters and waited quietly till the sun went off the water. As soon as I began I hooked and lost a good sewin in the rocks below the Meeting of the Waters, and go [sic] after to Gethi gemlyn [sic Gelli gemlyn]. Tuesday, 5 October [1880]. It rained very heavily during the night, and was raining this morning with a very cold Easterly wind blowing, so cold that snow is lying thickly both on Arran and Cader. We made an early start to the Mawddach, and went up to Pen y Bont, and found the Eden just a nice height and colour , But not a fish could we move. From there we went up the Mawddach to the Falls, but the river was too dirty for fly until quite late in the evening. I tried worm at the top pool below the Falls, and hooked a good fish, but whether it was a large Sewin or salmon I could not tell. I caught two Sewin, one of about 2lbs. I tried a fly later in the evening, and rose a fish at the tail of the Rock pool: the water was then much discoloured but the river began to fall fast. We were very late home, and got caught in the dark, so that Frank had to lead the pony in from Dolgun gate. Sea trout (Mawddach) 2

Wednesday 6th October 1880 Frank and I went to the Mawddach again, and found it in nice fly order, but the weather was dull and cold with more rain threatening. We began again up the Mawddach and fished steadily to the Falls, and I believe I rose a nice grilse twice in the first long pool in the wood. It looked a good fish. I caught 3 sewin with fly, but met no other fish: there was no rise on them at all. We went to the Meeting of the Waters eventually, and there found all the Mr Lee fishing, but he had no sport. We went below Tyn y groes and fished Gethi gemlyn [sic. Gelligemlyn?]. No result at all: it was a disappointing day. Sea trout (Mawddach) 3

Thursday, October 28, 1880 Very cold stormy and showery. I made an early start to the Mawddach, and of course found it very high. I went to the upper water and was in hopes the river would fall into fly order, but the Mawddach was dirty all day and fell very little, so I was obliged to fish with worm. I was broken in a good fish [sic] I think and I caught one sewin. As the Mawddach was hopeless for fly, this afternoon I went to the Eden, and found it in good order. I rose and pricked a nice fish in the second pool below Dolgyfeiliau. I went up to Craigwyn: but did not move a fish there. Mawddach. Sewin 1. about 2lbs.

Friday, October 29, 1880 Again went over to the Mawddach. A good deal of snow had fallen on the mountains during the night, but today the weather was settled, but cold. I began fishing at the junction pool, and tried steadily up the Mawddach which was in splendid order for fly all day, tho` high and fell very [tanlinellwyd] slowly indeed. I did not meet a fish till I came to the first long pool in the wood. At the tail end of the pool I rose a good fish twice, but he came shyly to the fly so I left him for the present. My next fish was a magnificent salmon, which rolled right over my fly, in the first pool below the Falls. I tried him again with the same fly a d-hooked Jock O`scotts, and again he came out at it. I gave the fish a long rest, and then tried him a third time, and again he rose at the fly. I determined not to change my fly, and the fourth time he came up and was pricked, and of course all was over after that. I hooked a smaller fish, I think a grilse in the same pool afterwards. Returning to the first long pool in the wood I rose my [sic. first?] fish of the morning again, and scratched him. I caught a nice sewin, and then home: weather turning fine and frosty. Mawddach. Tuesday, July 19 The rain of yesterday, and showers during the night put fresh water in the river, and I gave the on the [Wnion?] a try during the morning before breakfast but with no success. We started down to the Mawddach soon after 10, & found the river in fair order; I began above Dolglocarthau [sic] , while Wyn and Peter went up to Tyn y groes to fish up. I fished very fine [sic], and at the run hooked a Sewin and lost it; at the Poachers Rock I was luckier, killing two sewin – one of which was a good one 2lb 2oz. At the tail end of Gethigemlyn [sic Gelligemlyn] I stuck in a small grilse of 4lb: and also caught a small sewin. I killed the grilse on a peculiar fly wing. Peacock`s heel gold body hackle hackle peacock heel [sic]. I had bad luck after this as I lost two sewin, and hooked a good fish (foul) [sic] in Llyn Goch [sic] – at the tail end of the pool. I did not meet another fish up Tyn y groes, and I went up to the Tun to get some lunch, and heard that Wynne had gone up, so I walked up to the Meeting of the Waters and began to fish down: soon after which Wynne and Peter met me, as they had had been the Eden. Wynne had been interfered with by a man fishing in front of him, nevertheless he had hooked two or three sewin; but had only one fish of about 1lb which is caught up the Eden. We fished down to Tyn y groes, and excepting the fish which Wynne rose in the run below the long flat, saw nothing. We drove home with Mother and Nelly, been to Dolmelynllyn. Wynne and I determined to give the Mawddach another try on the strength of yesterday`s showers, and we found the river in fair order. Wynne and I began fishing above [tanlinellwyd] Dolgloelogna [???!!! Sic] and fished up, "Peter" driving the trap to Dolmelynllyn where we put it up. There was no rise on the sewin, and I did not hook a fish till I got to the Rocks where I lost a sewin of 2 lbs or so, and in the shallows above, I caught a fish of about 1 1/2 lbs. Wynne was no luckier as he only had a small sewin. After lunch we did not know what to do, but eventually ended in my going right up to Tyddyn y Gladys, and I tried down without success. Wynne tried among the rocks below Bryn Cemlyn, and lost a sewin with worm. We met at six at Dolmelynllyn, and were home in good time. Mawddach. Seatrout 2 (1) 1 1/2 lbs

Tuesday, July 26 [1881] Showery weather. I went up the Wnion today with small flies, and began at Llyn y foutin [sic], and fished up. I had no luck until I got above Llyn Goch [sic], just above which, in the shallows, I hooked a good sewin and after a good fight I landed it in the big pool. I caught it on the Soldier Palmer. No other incident occurred, and I fished up to Bont Llyn Rhaeadr. I started out without lunch, thinking I should return, but Roberts the stationmaster, very kindly brought it up to me. I caught some good trout, particularly between the big pool and Bont Newydd: but sewin seemed few and far between. Wyn did not fish today, Lewis Self and his wife came to stay here today. Wnion. Friday, July 29, [1881 ] Cold but fine. Wind NW. Went over to the Mawddach with Davies of Auchyfoyle [sic Allt y Foel?]: and found the river in good order for fly. I commenced fishing at Gethigemlyn [sic], and caught one sewin at the tail end: crossing to the Poachers Rock Pool, I tried it carefully and just under the rock I rose a nice salmon to the "Mystery", the fish coming at the fly as soon as it touched the water, nothing would induce him to come again. Davies saw this fish jump before I rose him. Above Gethigemlyn I met four rods, Willie Griffiths, the Colonel and two others, so I tried the Long Hat (which was too low) caught one sewin here, and had lunch. After which I stepped it up to Tyddyn y gladys and commenced in the pool, but did not meet a fish till I came to the Rock pool, at the tail end of which I rose a salmon twice to double h Durham Ranger: [tanlinellwyd]: unfortunately I got caught in a branch under water at my third attempt and in disengaging the fly, must have moved my fish, as he would not come again. I fished right up to the Falls without meeting another Fish, and was not home till late. This was a hard, but unfortunate days fishing, as a might! have done well. Mawddach Sea trout 2. Rose salmon.

Saturday, July 30, 1881 Fine day – though becoming unsettled towards evening, and I heard thunder. I determined to go over again to the Mawddach so I started after 9.30 breakfast to walk, and I began fishing among the Bryncemlyn rocks, and of course the river was low. I tried small flies, and did rise two sewin, and I found it very little use. I went down as far as Gethi-gemlyn [sic], and as high up as the Meeting of the Waters. I watched for some time the fish trying to jump the fall at Cornelius` pool, and here the river watcher joined me. I walked home, the rain coming on just as I got in.

Tuesday, August 2 I got up at 6:30, and tried the Wnion with small flies for sewin, but did not meet one. In to breakfast at 9.30, after which I went up to Llyn Cynwch, as the day promised to be fine, but a strong and gusty wind got up, which quite spoilt perch fishing, so this afternoon I came down to the river, and tried from the Ford pool up to Dolgarnedd wood, and only hooked one small sewin.

Wednesday, August 3 It was a rough night, a strong SW gale blowing with a good deal of rain, and it continued drizzling and misty all day. I started over to the Mawddach with Davies at 9 - and found the river in flood, but just falling. I began at Gethigemlyn [sic] with worm, and did nothing in the pool; the water was not high enough, but in the run above I caught two sewin which I was able to send home immediately as I sent the trap home with Edward, intending to stay the night at Tyn y groes. I crossed over Bryncemlyn bridge and went down to Llyn Goch [sic], but now the river was getting much too light for worm, but did not fall much, if at all [tanlinellwyd did>fall]. I caught two sewin here, and one above – not very large, and then had lunch, after which we walked up to the Meeting of the Waters, where I discovered Birkett had already been. I killed a nice sewin here, but could do nothing at the stepping stones, and Birkett afterwards told me he caught a fish over 3 pounds here. I now walked right up to the First Long Pool in the wood and tried with fly up to the Falls, but barring a large sewin which I caught on a big Durham Ranger I did not meet a fish. The river was very high. I fished till seven, and walked back to Tyn y groes. I dined this evening with Birkett and his wife. Thursday, August 4 Burkett and I breakfasted at 7:30: and soon after eight I went to the Eden, which I found in splendid order for fly. I caught a sewin immediately at the Pen y Bont Pool, and did well with sewin for the first two hours or so, killing five, but I was unfortunate in rising a salmon at the Mill Pool; the fish only making one offer and that a very shy one. I went up to Craigwryn [?] Pool, and only rose a sewin here, and was not more fortunate in the holes below. Though I rose a good sewin, I then left the Eden and walked up to Tyddyn y Gladys [sic], and fished up, but met FW Godsal fishing. He had done nothing at all. I went up to the Falls, not a fish stirring, and I fished very hard, and tried all sorts of flies. Meeting Godsall again at the Bridge, and also Massey Taylor, who is with him, we walked back to Tyn y groes together, and I gave them a lift to Hengwrt. Saturday, August 6, 1881 As a good deal of rain fell yesterday afternoon, I went over to the Mawddach, driving as far as Dolgarthan, and sending the trap home. The river was rather low, but a good colour. I did not raise a sewin until I came to Gethigemlyn [sic. Gelligemlyn], at the tail end of which I met a fish, in the run above I got a small sewin, & I was then going on to try the Bryn Cemlyn rocks, when I met four boys and a man fishing down, so I walked straightway to Cornelius` and had my lunch at that pool, and then commenced fishing just above. I fished mostly upstream and in one of the first holes I hooked a nice fish which turned out to be a small Grilse of 2 3/4 lbs. It was rough work fishing through the wood, and the midges and flies were awful. I caught another sewin about 1lb and lost enough [sic. another?] . I walked up to the first long pool in the wood, to try the top of that, and then started homewards about 4.30 a long walk, but which I accomplished in less than 2 hours. sewin (Mawddach) 2 (1) 1lb. Sunday, August 7 A threatening looking morning.... Monday, August 8 Rain fell heavily during the night: and I got up about six o`clock and went out for an hour on the Wnion, and with fly caught two small sewin at the Ford Pool. I rose one at the crooked pool and one at the pool in the hollow, in to breakfast at 8 o`clock, and then Davies and I started over to Mawddach driving up to Pen y Bont and Davies took the trap back to Dolmelynllyn. At Cornelius` pool I caught a nice sewin of 1 3/4 pounds: and then went up Eden; I did not meet a good fish till I got up to [Craigwryn], halfway down which pool I saw a boil at my fly, which was no doubt a big fish. I rose him to thunder and lightning, and then tried him with Durham Ranger, but he would not come again, so I had lunch it now being 1 o`clock and I cast over the fish afterwards, but he would not move. I continued fishing to the end of the pool, and at the very end just as I was making my last cast, I stuck in a good fish, which gave me a bit of running about, as he did his best to leave the pool, but I coaxed him up and just as I got him in a good position, the fish came away, and I lost him – a fish about 9lbs. I caught three sewin in Eden, one of 2lbs – and then about 4.30 I crossed to Mawddach, and tried steadily up from Tyddyn y Gladys, but could not meet a fish, so I went up to the top pools and as the river was pretty high, I put on a good size double hooked "Jock Scots" which had the desired effect, as in the Minor`s pool, I stuck in a good fish, which I landed after a short tussle: he was very long and much below weight, having been in trouble before, apparently last year as there was a hole where the hook had been in the upper jaw. I tried the top pool and at the tail end of it hooked a fine salmon which rushed up to the head of the pool, made one plunge and was off. I had a long walk back, and we did not get home till 8.45 . Tuesday, August 9 [1881]. I got up before six, and went out on the Wnion, and it was in capital order for fly. I went up to the big pool, but did not hook a fish until I came to the pool opposite Pugh`s farm, here I lost a good sewin. I fished down to the pool in the hollow, at the tail end of which I hooked a fine fish, which after some trouble I landed; it was exactly 3 pounds. I went to the Petty Sessions this morning and did not get away till 1.30: but I had my fishing things ready and Richie met me on the in the Tunn, and he I Davies went over in the car. We had our lunch on the way to save time, and we drove up to Pen y Bont as I went to the upper part of the river, as the lower part was being well fished, I commenced at Eden bridge pool and caught a small sewin here, and at Cornelius` got to sewin and rose a grilse twice and hooked him, and he gave me good sport, and I gaffed him myself: he was fresh-run, and a very pretty fish. Thursday, August 25 It rained heavily from about six o`clock, and continued without intermission all day with heavy squalls from The SW: and it was one of the roughest days I ever remember. Fred Robinson and I started over to Tyn-y-groes about 9 o`clock, and as the river had not come down I went up towards the falls, but when I reached Pen y Bont the Eden was in flood, so I walked up to the wooden bridge and the soon as I got here the Mawddch came down in high and dirty flood. It was too high to fish above so I walked down and met Robinson, who had Davies with him, and off we went to get a Gethigemlyn, and here I began picking up some nice sewin. I ought to mention that Davies killed a nice fish of about 2 1/2 pounds with worm in Tyn-y-groes pool, and lost another. Fred Robinson did not manage the worm well, and I caught 13 out of the 16 . I did well at Llyn Goch [sic] and the rocks above in the evening, the river gradually rising again. Wet and cold (though I changed my stockings and knickerbockers) we started home about 6, and I was seized with a severe attack of spasms and felt very upset on way home: the result of a chill. Friday, October 14   It blew a terrible gale in the night, with deluges rain and the wind continued throughout the day with great fury, and with heavy showers of hail and rain. I had some difficulty in getting to Tyn y groes owing to the wind but Edward drove me and Kenzie over in the [tax] cart. The river was high and milky white, but had fallen a good deal during the morning. We went up above the Meeting of the Waters and up to the Falls in the hope of evading the wind & we certainly did get sheltered above the Tyddyn y Gladys [sic]. Worm fishing was alone practicable, but it was not much use, and I only caught one sewin, but lost a nice fish. I went to the Eden late about [2?] the wind having moderated: I had not the courage to face the wind there before, so but [sic] the Eden was in fly order all day. I rose a fine salmon in one of the pools, but he would not come a second time, and half an hour afterwards the river rose a foot and was barely fishable. Kinsey finished with worm. Mawddach. Saturday, October 15

Weather cold and showery, hail and rain. Snow on the mountains. I made a start to the river soon after 7am and went to Cornelius’ pool, intending to try the Eden first. I commenced though at Cornelius‘ and had the  luck to hook a fine fish at the tail end of the pool. I played the fish for about 20 minutes,  and gaffed him myself; the fish being too large for Kinsey to get it in the net. The fish was a splendid shape, thick and fresh. I left the fish at Cornelius‘ house, and then went up the Eden, and tried many of the pools up to the factory without meeting the fish, but the river was very clear. I then returned to the Mawddach and went above the wooden bridge, and in the  gut pool  I killed a grilse of 7 pounds – a red cock. I did not meet another fish until I got to the Minor’s pool, and here I rose a nice fish 4 times, and he did not move after that. At the top of pool  below Falls I met a grilse, but he refused any other offers: both these fish rose to a large Jock Scots. I tried most of the pools down again, and did not meet another until I came to the gut pool, where I killed my grilse in the morning, and here at the tail end I moved a fine salmon with the Stevenson: he would not come a second time, although I tried him hard.  I gave up about 5, and Edward met me at Tyn y groes in the cart. The river fell but little all day, and was of a clear white colour and the bottom very clear.

Monday, June 5 Wynne and I, not expecting such a downpour as ensued, made an early start at seven over the hill to Pant glas to fish for trout, but we were not very far on our way when a tremendous downpour of rain came on. Wynne unfortunately was without a mackintosh, so very soon got wet through, I however kept tolerably dry all day with my little mackintosh. The rain was so heavy that by the time we got to Pant glas, the river was almost unfishable, and soon became completely so, however we fished rapidly down, and soon after our early lunch, we went to the Caine [sic Cain], which we found one boiling mass of foam. We could do nothing now, but start homeward, but on reaching Tyn y groes, I determined to try for sewin, to see if there were any in the river. Of course I only had my very small trout rod, with me. The weather here was in excellent trim for worm, and I crossed over to Llyn Coch where I soon killed two little silver beauties, and subsequently I caught a 3rd at the upper Bryncemlyn pool. I left about six, and walked home across the hill via Nannau; the river was getting into quite good fly order when I left, as the rain had ceased about 3. CEME Mawddach Seatrout 3 (1) 1 3/4lb. I began at the Poachers Rock, whilst Wyn went up to the Bryncemlyn Rocks. I lost a good fish at Gethligemlyn [sic Gelligemlyn]. I am not sure that it was not a Grilse, as I rose it twice: I, of course, was on Vaughan`s side. I joined Wyn for lunch, and he had been equally unfortunate in losing two nice sewin. After lunch I went up as far as the first Long Pool in the Wood, having previously fished Dolgoed Pool, where I caught my only fish, and I rose two others here. I met Roma at the Meeting of the Waters, and he gave me accounts of a salmon he had lost in Eden. Subsequently I went back to Tyn y groes bridge, and the Squire met us, and drove us home. Wednesday, June 7 I walked over to the Mawddach, and found the river low, but a good colour. Continual showers throughout the day, no doubt caused the river to rise a little, and a very heavy shower came on as I was having my lunch just below Tyn y groes. I fished up as far as this from Gethigemlyn [sic Gelligemlyn], and only met 3 sewin, one of which I caught (1 3/4 lbs) and another I lost in the pool below Tyn y groes. I got up to Cornelius`s Pool about 3.45, not having stirred another fish, and I stupidly commenced to fish this pool with small sewin flies on, and very fine gut. Oh! how I regretted it, for I had not made half a dozen casts when at the edge of the Rock on which I was standing a very fine fish rolled out at my fly and I was fast on him. He evidently took the small red Irish Fly I had on at the tail. The fish was very quiet at first, and preferred sticking to the rocks, and I dared not keep a heavy strain on him. But I moved my position, and I had some hopes of killing him – I was without a gaff and all alone. After an hour`s play it got rather tedious, and I managed to move him and he made a great rush down stream only to return to his former position; again I moved him and this time all was over as he made a rush and a plunge and was off. I had however the satisfaction to find that he had not broken me after nearly an hour and a half`s play: and I think the fish from what I saw of him was quite 15lb. As I was playing him another fish rose near me three times, and I tried for him without success. Afterwards I packed up to walk home, and got in in good time. Wynne had a really good day with the trout, catching 40 – 14 of which were from Pell gelli [sic Pwll y Gele] largest 3/4lb and they were a nice show of fish. Thursday, June 8 .......I had the boat taken up in the cart to Pwll Gelli [Pwll y Gele?], and I walked up there afterwards, and began fishing about 9.30. The lake is now very full of water which made it all the better as far as the weeds were concerned. A light breeze was blowing and showers fell during the morning which turned to heavy rain in the afternoon. I had capital sport, the fish being well on the rise to a small dun on the water, but I found Wickhams Fancy doing good execution – also a red hackle Coch y bondhu with red tag. I was broken twice by good fish in the weeds, and it required some skill to keep the fish from them when hooked, however I was tolerably lucky in this respect and did not lose many. I finished till 3: but all my sport was obtained before 1.30: as there was no breeze in the afternoon and although I rose fish I could not hook them. I tried the Wnion for sewin afterwards without success: the rivers rose rapidly after the heavy rain: Trout 31. Llyn Pwllgelli (1)1lb. (1) 3/4lb. and several 1/2lb or more

Friday, June 9 I started over to the Mawddach with William Roberts soon after 8 o`clock, walking across the hill: and I found the river in grand order. Commenced at Llyn Coch with worm, but soon changed to fly, and mounted a thunder & lightning and yellow Body. Mallard Wing fly [sic], and my sport was excellent. I was lucky with the first 3 fish I killed, but I lost one fine sewin in Gethigemlyn [Gelligemlyn] from being in too great a hurry; it was here that I killed the 2 1/2lb fish. I also lost another large one higher up. Returning to Bryncemlyn Pool for the second time, at the tail end of it I rose a salmon, and hooked him the second time, but I had him on for a very short time, For he [shook?] the hook out. I ought to have changed to a double [tanlinellwyd] hookedfly. Heavy rain came on, and the river rose gradually, and I went down on the Vaughan`s side to the Gethigemlyn Ford [tanlinellwyd] when I rose a grilse 3 times – and landed him: a perfect little fish as bright as a shilling. Returning to Bryncemlyn Pool I found Griffith there, having just landed a 7 pound grilse therefrom. I went into Tyn y Groes about 6, and started William Roberts home over the hill, intending to stay the night at Tyn y groes, as I had sent for my bag. Saturday, June 10 I was out on the river soon after 8, which had considerably fallen, and I tried some of the little pools but only rose one sewin, so after meeting Kinsey and Lewis Davies, I determined to walk up above, and the latter with William accompanied me [sic]. I put up a small double hooked Durham Ranger, and stuck in a fine fish at the 1st Long Pool in the wood which gave me 20 minutes exciting sport as he was very lively. I gaffed the fish myself weight10 1/2 lbs quite fresh. It is very funny but I never saw the fish take my fly, although Davies did, and I was in the act of clambering along the rock, of course I suddenly found my line tight in something! It is very lucky Davies did not shout when he say [sic. saw] the fish rise, or else a serious smash might have ensued. I fished right up to the Falls, but did not stir another fish. The Squire and Mother met me at 5:45 at Tyn y groes. I hooked a nice Sewin just above wooden bridge. Mawddach Salmon 1 10 1/2lbs Fly D. Hooked Durham Ranger. Earliest fish.

Tuesday, June 13 The weather looked unsettled this morning, and I was out before breakfast on the Wnion, and I tried both the Ford pool and Llyn y [Foutin] with small flies, but did not see a sewin. Into breakfast at 9: afterwards I started over the hill to the Mawddach and commenced fishing at Gelligemlyn: the river was low, but I expected a fish or two at the head of the pools, but I did not rise one, until I came to the Tyn y groes lower pool, Where I hooked what I think, was a large fish, however he was off in no time. Meanwhile rain had been coming down very heavily and as I was nearly wet through (having stupidly started without my mackintosh) I determined to give it up for the day, knowing full well that a heavy flood would come down, and I had neither hooks nor worms. I had my lunch before starting, and walked home quick, and went in to change, and sallied forth again about 4 enveloped in mackintosh, which was necessary, as the rain came down in torrents. Of course the rivers rose rapidly, but nevertheless it is odd I did not come across a single sewin, and trout would not bite. I tried Dolgun as well is up to the Ford Pool. A very heavy flood tonight. Wnion (Trout 3)

Wednesday, June 14. I had breakfast at 6:30, and with William Roberts made an early start to the Mawddach across the hill. I commenced fishing at 8.20 at Llyn Coch, with a worm, but soon changed to fly, and at the tail end of this pool, I cooked a nice little fresh run sewin. I fished up to Bryn cemlyn, but did nothing except rise a sewin or two, and had particular bad luck at the Tyn y groes pool, as I lost two sewin there, and rose a third. I started up to the upper water, knowing full well that it would be in excellent order, and I began at the Rock bu did not move a fish here or at the first Long Pool in the Wood, where it now being 12 o`clock I sat down for 20 minutes and had a bit of lunch. I went on up to the to Tyddyn y Gladys [sic] Pool, and at the lower part of it, I saw something break the water at my fly, a DH Durham Ranger, William Roberts saw the fish and thought it about 8lbs. Again I tried him, and he rose beautifully at the fly, but missed it. I now changed to a large DH Jack Scott`s, and meanwhile the fish rose to himself, which indicated to me to a nicety where to "put" the fly, and I had the fish firm and fast. He was a strong fish, and gave me some exciting sport, but in about half an hour, I have the satisfaction of gaffing a fresh run salmon of of 10lbs. I went on up, and fished the Minor`s pool blank, but at the tail end of the top pool below the Falls, I had the luck to stick in another good fish, though not quite so fresh as the first, but he was 11lb: and was hooked firmly on a DH Durham ranger. William Roberts landed him cleverly in the net. I had now not much more time, and I ended up with one more try at the First Long Pool in the Wood: but without results. It took down my rod with much regret, it being now three: and had a care to meet one at Tyn y groes: and I was soon home after a most enjoyable day`s sport. I left Dolserau this evening by the Mail for town, and the Squire and mother arrived from Aberyswyth [Aberystwyth sic] in the phaeton, whence they had driven, in good time to see me off. Mawddach Salmon 1 11lbs First Pool below the Falls. DH Durham ranger. Salmon 1 10lbs Tyddyn y Gladys Pool DH Jock Scott`s. Sea trout 1 (1lb)

Thursday, July 13 [1882] ...Reached home at six, and as the Wnion was in flood I took my rod out for an hour or so before dinner which I had at 8:30. I went to the Ford Pool, which I tried first with worm then with fly, and I captured a nice sewin at the tail end of it with the "Claret and Joy. Friday, July 14 I made a start to the Mawddach soon after 8 this morning, driving up to Pen y Bont and of course I went up above towards "the Falls". The river was in high [fly? ply?] and too discoloured - in fact a bad colour for fly - I rose a nice fish in Tyddyn y Gadlys and it was the only fish I met up above. I went to latterly below the "Meeting of the Waters", and I met with Willie Griffith at the Dolcoed [sic.] Pool, and he had finished up with some success as he had 4 sewin. I tried the Railings Pool, and here caught my only fish – a nice sewin of 2 pounds. I went down to Gethigemlin [sic.] and there met Major Biknill, who had done nothing. Heavy rain came on and they went to Tyn y groes, staying there the night, as also did Griffith, and we dined together at 8:30. Mawddach Seatrout 1 (2lbs)

Monday, July 17 I made a start to the Mawddach about 8 o`clock walking over with William Roberts. The river was not at all high, but in good order and colour, but as more rain came on in the afternoon, there is no doubt it rose a little. I began well, catching the sewin of 2 1/2lbs at Bryn cemlyn Pool, 2lbs at Tyn y groes run, and another 2 1/2lbs at Llyn Coch. I also touched two or three others. I lunched at the Meeting of the Waters, and then went up and fished to Tyddyn y Gladys [sic] , and from the top pools down to Tyddyn y Gladys, and here I hooked a good fish in one of the swirls, which gave me considerable trouble in the dry channels of the pool, but the fish was well hooked, and I did not want to take him down in case of disturbing the lower portion of the pool, and with patience I got him into the net. The fly was a new pattern - yellow red blue body pigswool wing, Mallard and jungle cock feather, Hackle Blue. I tried the first Long Pool in the wood, and it being then 5.30 I went home very content with my day`s sport. Mawddach, Salmon 1 9 1/2 lbs. Tuesday, July 18 I went over to the river again driving to Tyn y groes, and they went up and commenced at the railings, where I tracked a good sewin, and at Dolcoed [sic. Dolgoed] Pool I rose a nice grilse twice near the head of the Channel, and there is no doubt the fish saw me rising so close to me. I met Kinsey and as he told me the Barmouth Fisherman Proudley was fishing above me with worm. I walked up above Cwm y Avon [sic. Cwm yr Afon] but did not stir a single fish, and it was not until I came down below the junction, that I hooked a fish – 4 lb grilse in the lower portion of the Meeting of the Waters and ugly fish in poor condition. Fly dark Scotch, Fly Mallard Wing. The Squire and mother met me in the phaeton, and Nelly rode over, and we had a tremendous ducking going home. Before coming into breakfast I fished from Pughs Farm to Dolgun, and only got one sewin a small fish at Dolgun: and I lost another. After breakfast I fished up from Pughs Farm and went up to the viaduct, but I only met one sewin. I had to walk home very quickly, as I left this afternoon for Shrewsbury to attend the Assizes, the Commission being opened there today. I reached Shrewsbury about six: and dined at Megs [?] at seven. The business at Shrewsbury was unusually heavy – 16 Causes in the Cause List, and about 18 prisoners for trial. Began at the Railings, but I lost two small sewin, and they caught one at the Meeting of the Waters. Went up but did not stir a fish until I came to the second pool below the Falls which I fished with Jock Scots down, and whipping back I rose a fine salmon, which however I failed to move again. I rose one or two sewin and it was a regular unlucky day for me. The rain was very heavy in the N: and both the Eden and Cemlyn came down heavy, and I am sorry now that I did not stay below. I began at the Ford, and seeing the cormorant, I took the trouble to go back and get a gun, but on returning, I did not see the bird, and it must have gone up to the Big Pool. I came in to breakfast and went out again afterwards and fished up to Bont Newydd: and had some good sport with the trout, killing 26 and a small sewin. I rose several sewin, one or two at the crooked Pool and a very good one at Fronwion. Home about 2.30, and we played lawn tennis all the afternoon, the weather being perfect, very sunny and clear, too fine to last. After tennis, I went up to the Big Pool and had a very nice bathe. A nice breeze was blowing during the morning, and we picked up some nice trout, but lost several in the weeds, and the best one I lost by not having the landing net in the boat. At 1:30 the others came up with the lunch, and I`ve had a very pleasant picnic, that we only just escaped the rain. Saturday, August 5 We had arranged to go up Cader today, but they day did not look very promising, as there was a thick mist on the mountain. "Peter" M`Micking and I bathed this morning, and we started in the carriage for Dolgellau about 10, and picked up Mrs Lewis Self there, who came with us. We got three ponies from the Angel, and rode them up to the place we started from beyond Llyn Crogennan. The mist hung very thickly on the hill, and it was not long before we were enveloped in it. It took us about 1 1/2 hours to get to the top, where we had some shelter and had a capital lunch. We lost Pugh our guide going down, and it was not difficult to miss the way. The mist rose a little, but we really saw no view the whole day. The Ladies were rather tired after the expedition. It cleared, and became beautifully fine this evening. I went down to the Ford Pool for half an hour before dinner with M`Micking, and I hooked a small sewin there, and tried the "crooked pool" and "Pool in the Hollow" without success.

It was not a favourable day but the dogs worked carefully, and found the few birds I saw, well. The best covey got up wild, and I did not get a shot at it, and never saw it a second time. I killed 8 grouse out of nine shots, but I lost one bird over some high cliffs, which we looked for in vain, but it fell over a very rough place near the stream. Saturday, October 21 We had breakfast at 7 o`clock, and I started to the upper water at 7:45. Rain duringi the night put the river in good order, and more water came down in the afternoon which made it almost too dirty for fly. Major O`C tried the pools below Tyn y groes, and joined me later in the afternoon, and I am sorry he had no luck. I caught my first fish in Tyddyn y gladys, raising him twice to a double hooked Stevenson with Milo doing a pattern Ashley gave me to try . The second fish I caught at the top pool below the falls on the double hook Stevenson. Both fish I played and gaffed alone, Kinsey who had promised to come with me never turning up. I rose another fish 3 times to a Durham Ranger in the small pool above Tyddyn y gladys [sic]: and also another late in the evening at the tail of the First Long Pool in the wood. This fish rose twice to my fly. Major O`C touched a fish in Tyddyn y Gladys. The sewin I caught with a worm at the top pool below the Falls when the river became rather discoloured. The Squire and Mrs O`Callaghan met us. Mawddach CEME Salmon 1 11 1/2lbs Tyddyn y gladys Salmon 1. 11 1/2 lbs top pool below falls as to fly see above Sewiin 1 2 3/4lbs

Friday, October 27. A cold but lovely day, wind easterly. After 9.30 breakfast I drove up to Hengwrt Ucha, and walked up to Blainai [sic]. Major O`C stayed at home, and puddled about for sewin. I had a long walk, but could not come across partridges: and in fact only found a small lot of four, out of which I killed a right and left. I saw 3 hares, and ought to have killed one on Thebonewydd [sic]. I walked home. Blainai. Partridges 2. Snipe 1. Various 1. Major O`C killed one sewin on the Wnion.

After the rain of yesterday I anticipated the river in ood order... walked over the hill to Gethigemlyn (sic. Gelligemlyn) , but found the river rather low. I began with small flies, and fished up until I met Kinsey opposite Bryncemlyn fishing down. I had only had one small sewin, and had another, and risen a third. I walked up to the junction but found someone else fishing there, so i went up to the old miner`s Bridge Pool , had my lunch, and then went down again. I began at the Nailings [Railings?] , but found it too low, and went latterly to Penrhos Pool, at the head of which in the rough water I hooked a splendid fish which gave me grand sport. I had very fine tackle, so it wanted all my skill to play the fish, and unfortunately I had no gaff with me. But I killed the fish in about 20 minutes and, at the second attempt "tailed" him. Weight 14 1/2 lbs, and the fly was a small sea trout fly. with teal and mixed wing, and black and brown body ribbed with silver thread. I took the fish up to to Tyn-y-groes and Williams took it down to Llaneltydd Bridge, where I met the Coach returning at six o`clock. I fished down, but only rose a small sewin. The weather was very unsettled this afternoon, the wind being very strong from the N. with slight rain showers. I met the Coach at Llaneltydd Bridge.

A fine day - though it became unsettled towards evening, and rained hard during the night. I went up to Pwllgelli this morning. Rice[?} Price having sent the boat up there for me. the pool was very weedy and clear, however. by fishing with two flies carefully, I picked up ten trout, but only had one decent fish of 3/4lb. Latterly I went down to the river, and fished up to Bont Rhiadyr, but only caught 22 small trout, and did not see so much as a sewin. I walked home. Pwllgelli: Trout 10 (1) 3/4 lb. Wnion Trout 22.

After 8.45 breakfast, I walked over to the Mawddach to find it in low ply[?], and a very dark colour. I began at Gethigemlyn [sic. Gelligemlyn]. and higher up met several other rods, so i walked up to Dolgoed, where I moved[?] a sewin, the only fish I rose all day. I then went up to Glen-yr-Afon. and latterly up to the Falls, but to no purpose. Nelly drove the dog cart over and met me at Tyn-y-groes - I left Home this evening for Shrewsbury for the Assizes, and went to the Lion Hotel.

I breakfasted at 8, and walked over the hill to the Mawddach to find it in low ply. I went to Gethigemlyn, and of course I found it in first rate order. I had only made two casts, when I rose a fine salmon on a small double hooked orange fly. i thought I had touched the fish, but I waited and he came again and was fast. The fish played hard, but the hook could not have been firm as he broke away after about half an hours play, and when hewas right on the other side of the river. I was very disappointed in losing this fish as he was not much under 15lb. I fished up to Tyn-y-groes, and latterly went up to the Falls, but did not move a fish up there. I went down to Gethigemlyn again before starting home, and I killed a nice sewin in the river above the Pool. walked home across the hill. A fine day, though close and unsettled in the morning. Wynne went to the Benglog stream, and had a fair day with the small trout. C.E.M.E. Maeddach . Sea Trout 2. W.G. Benglog Stream Trout 56.

I bathed this morning, and after breakfast walked up to Cae Coch to beat the moor with Roc [dog] as I was anxious to see what grouse were on it. I beat it close, and only saw nine grouse - one lot of four. Lunched at Drws-y-nant and walked homeward, and as soon as I got home I went to try the river for Sewin, with small flies, as there was a little fresh water in it this morning, but I did not see one. ...

... up to Dolelogau Fawr, where I began fishing. River in nice order, but I was much bothered by others fishing. I killed two small sewin in the White Stone Pool, where I began, and these were the only fish I got all day. I went right up to the Falls but did not stir a salmon. Walked home. Wynne, after going into Dolgelley during the morning to attend the Sessions in order to give evidence agst [against] the Poachers he caught in the river last Sunday week, fished the Wnion and caught one Sewin [sea trout] and some trout. It poured with rain early this morning. and blew great guns. I did not go over to the Mawddach I am sorry to say, as I no doubt would have had a good day, but Wynne and I stuck to the Wnion, and did very little good, as the river got too high. Of course we had to fish with worm all day, and went right up to Bont Rhi[d?]elyn. We only got four Sewin, and about 20 brown trout. Wynne caught 3 sewin, and I one, but they were al small. The rain ceased about 3 o`clock, but some heavy showers came down occasionally. the wind was very high all day, in fact it was a very stormy day. Wnion. Sea trout 4. Brown Trout 20.

Weather very unsettled, with heavy rain in the afternoon. After eleven o`clock breakfast, I went out with my rod until lunchtime; and tried for Sewin (sea trout) with small flies, but could do nothing, only rising two.... went out again after lunch, when it rained very heavily. I caught one sewin with worm at the top of the Big Pool. The river then came down in flood, and I went to Dolgun where I caught three sewin ...Wynne tried the Fad [?], and joined me at Dolgun, he also had three sewin, and had during the early part of the day very good sport at Pwllgelli ... killing 16 nice trout the pool being very full of water after the rain. We caught a few brown trout also in the river. Wnion Sea trout 7. (small 3/4 lb) Brown Trout 12 - Pwllgelli Trout 16

Heavy rain fell this morning... drove up to Aber Eden intending to fish the Falls , but the river rose rapidly, and I was obliged to begin with worm - which I did at the run below the 1st long pool in the wood, when I caught a good sewin [sea trout]. Percy Gye went up to wait for the water to get in order for fly, and I fished down with worm, but had little sport until I went below the Meeting of the Waters. I killed two fine fish at the tail end of the "Upper Bryn??ly? pool", and at 5 tried a fly at the tail end of "Lower Bryncelyn pool and hooked a large fish. Ended up at Gethigemlyn pool, but found Harry Lee fishing with minnow from the other side. Percy Gye killed a nice Sewin [sea trout] of 2lb 10oz at the tail end of the 1st Long pool in the Wood, the only fish he saw. The river though was too high and discoloured for the Upper Waters. Mawddach. Sea trout 8 - (1) 3 3/4 lb (3) 2 lb Sea Trout 1 (2lb 10oz - [total 9] 3. Brown Trout 4.

A lovely day. I was out on the river at half past seven and tried for a sewin, but could not get one. After breakfast ... strolled up to Pwlchgelli [details of party] for a picnic. It was very little use fishing as there was hardly any breeze at all. I killed one trout about 1/2 lb, and we had two others smaller. This afternoon I walked up to Bontnewydd and began fishing just above the bridge, and I caught a small sewin immediately. I fished some way up but could catch nothing except catch a few small trout. It came over very gloomy and slight rain fell ... fished homewards. Percy and Mrs Gye did nothing after I left them at Pwlchgelli. Pwlchgelli trout 3. Wnion. Sea trout 1. Brown trout 16.

A rainy morning made me decide to go to the Mawddach again... began worm fishing opposite Bryncemlyn, but the wind was so high, it was very difficult... walked up and tried the Miners Bridge Pools and I rose a very fine salmon here, but he would not come again....[detail of broken rod] I hooked a large fish - I think a sewin on the worm. In the afternoon I tried up to the Falls, but only rose one other salmon at the tail of the 1st Long Pool in the Wood, very shy as usual. I gave up at Dolgoch dead beat. Mawddach. Sewin 1.

8th October 1884 A wet morning and so hard did the rain come down that I went off to the Mawddach about 12 o`clock... I found the river dead low.... A more disastrous season on the river I never experienced - owing entirely to the exceptional drought for there were plenty of fish in the river; and many good sewin succumbed to the only place feasible - vis night fishing - which Kinsey, Harry Lee, Captain Bailey and others on the spot resorted to.....

Saturday September 4th The Minor had to go to Chester today to be examined by a Medical Board. I went by the coach to Llanelltydd [sic], to fish up the Mawddach. The river was in splendid order for fly. I hooked a salmon in Vanner Abbey Pool, but lost him: he was no doubt a very fine fish. I also rose another good fish in the same Pool. I fished up carefully all the pools to Tyn y groes, and only killed 5 Sewin; one being about 1 [and a quarter pounds], but I rose a good many, but they seemed rather shy of a fly. I walked home across the hill through Nannau, and got in by 7.30. Sea trout (Mawddach) 5 (1)1[ and a quarter pounds]

July 16th A very close and hot day. The Minor and I drove over to to Tyn y groes this morning, and fished up to the `meeting of the waters`: but did nothing. We then walked up to the `Falls` which we reached about 1.30: and soon after our people came with lunch, and we picniced at the Falls, afterwards I fished down from the Falls: while the Minor fished above for trout. I had no sport, but rose a Sewin: and killed three eels, at the `meeting of the waters`. At 6.30 I walked back to Tyn y groes, expecting to find them all there: and I waited till 7.15, and then walk home across the mountain. and got in at 8 o`clock. We sat down for a `cold tea dinner` at 9 o`clock. Trout (Mawddach) 20. Eels 3
